interestingly, I've got a home folder and a folder with my name on it. 
there is nothing in the home folder.

• Actually Scott, this is only true in Column mode.  If you are in
Icon or List mode, the new folder will still be created at root level.

• I haven't tested this on a full keyboard but deselecting with fn
+control+option+cmd+f4 does work on my MacBook.
