ok, but is there not a limit of drive size with fat-32?

TK:  No.  There's a couple of ways around it though.  You could copy
the data onto your iMac if you purchased the iMac with the 500 GB HD
and then simply work from the iMac.  If you wished to use both
platforms for writing, then you could copy the data from the external
HD to the iMac, reformat the external HD to FAT32 then put everything
right back on.  This should give you access with both platforms for
reading and writing.
