the easiest way to do this unless you want them to be using ITunes and if
this is ITunes stuff, you may not be able to play the ITunes proprietary
files without it, you can put anything you want to share in your drop box
which is under:
/users/your name/public/dropbox.
Then if you have personal file sharing active in sharing under system
preferences windows users can map the drive and only access that folder and
Mac users can use command-k to find it.

I find that we need to access a lot of stuff, so I have my systems behind a
stiff firewall and make everything publicly accessible so I can access
anything on any system from the root up.

So, there are two steps to what you want to do unless you are talking about
ITunes users which has already been described.

1> go into system preferences, click the sharing button, Check personal file
sharing. The text there tells you how other users can access your files.

Then, put anything you want to share in your dropbox as explained above and
you are ready to rock and roll on the Mac side. Once this is done, a
windows user needs to either go to run and type in the path like:
\\192.168.1.3\putlic\droptox
or whatever you saw in that text box in file sharing or go to in th case of
xp, my computer or windows explorer and choose Map network drive I don't
know how to do this in vista, click browse and find your computer name and
click ok if it opens. they may also have to look under the computer name
for the folder but probably not. click ok and then they can just access the
content. If you want to be able to get files from them, they just have to
make sure that all the folders through the path they are shring or the root
which I do are shred. so if they are sharing c:\downloads\music
then downloads\music both need to be shared as I understand it.

Subject: a network question

hi there;
ok, so this is what i want to do, can someone give me a hand with pointing
me to a good website or place or just give me step-bye-step directions on
doing this?
I want to shair my music directory with all the other computers on my
network, it's my macbook, then um, sabrina, bev, and kym's windows machines.
I want them to be able to access the music directory, and the music
directory only. How would be the best way to do this? They are all running
xp, i think oh wait, shelley, someone who is going to come over once in a
while is running vista, so if directions are different for vista could you
include those directions as well? And if i wanted to access there music
directory's on there windows machines from my macbook is that easy to do as
well?
thanks a lot
michael
