Problem with working with disclosure triangles

hey all,,
I have a file  type which I wanted to always open with VLC when double- 
clicked,  and I hit command i on the file to go in and set that up,  
and when I got to the open with section of the info for the file, VO  
said that the disclosure triangle was not expanded, and I hit VO  
backslash to expand it, and all I got, was a ding.  Any ideas anyone?
