Jacob's answer, posted after mine, of using VO+space to open
disclosure triangles is probably a better answer to use and to
remember. This sequence "performs the default action" -- which
in this case is to open the disclosure triangle. I'm using Tiger, and
I haven't had the occasional VoiceOver freezing problems he
finds in Leopard (but not in Tiger) when he opens the triangles
with cursor tracking on, but he very nicely gives the recommended
fix for this (turn cursor tracking off temporarily with VO+shift+F3)
and advice on what to do if there is a freeze-up (command+tab
away from the finder application, then switch back and close
the window with command+w).
Option-click is a general Mac keyboard shortcut for toggling
disclosure triangles under Get Info and is not specific to VoiceOver.
I'm guessing that VO backslash expands folders, but it doesn't
work in general to expand all disclosure triangles because some
of these don't have folder-like structures.

To open the disclosure triangle under the Get Info section of the
file
you're checking, try using Option-click (where you click with your
mouse or trackpad button). That should work to toggle the
disclosure triangle between collapsed and expanded. (Note: I have
"Mouse Cursor tracks VoiceOver Cursor" checked in my VoiceOver
navigation options. If you don't have your mouse cursor tracking
your VoiceOver Cursor you'll need to use VO-keys+Command+F5
to move your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor before you do
an Option-click. As always, on laptops you may need to also press
the FN key with the F5 key.)
