Regarding your automater workflow, these are the actions it must have
at minimum for it to work:
get selected iTunes tracks
send songs to iPod
You then have to select tracks, and run the workflow. Personally, I
think it's easier to get the iPod synched up either with your library
or with a playlist of songs, but to do that you have to get around the
iPod registration screen if you haven't already, or if you have a used
iPod you might not even have to deal with that.
