Hi Tim, Esther and others,
I have experimented some more with limited success. Oddly enough, the combination works on rare occasions, but I am not sure what determines this. I used option command shift x, as well as a few others, to make the start speaking text shortcut. Other ones I have tried have not worked, so I am wondering if it is a system specific problem. Could it be that Spark is installed? As far as I can tell, btw, none of the combinations I have used have been conflicts with existing ones.

Hi John,

Everything worked as it should in Leopard as well. As Esther mentioned, when creating a "All Applications" shortcut, it is good to Restart your computer. I would guess that this is because the Finder is always running and in order to make the shortcut work properly, restarting is necessary. As well, I usually avoid the ctrl and option keys for the shortcuts when VO is running as Yvonne recommended. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.
