Technically FiOS is Fiber Optic Service, but I'm sure they didn't mind it also meaning "knowledge" or "information" in Gælic.

Yes. *smile* That's the one I mean. And I wonder if the word fios is
Greek? Must look this up.

So, since you have issues when directly connected to the modem, it is either
a modem issue or a cable issue. I didn't know verizon offered cable. Are
you talking fios?

Yes, we have the bundle of phone, internet and cable. We haven't had
problems with the phone. However, we're switching to Verizon in any
case. We tried their dsl awhile ago and had problems, but since they
do cable now too, we figured we'd give them a shot. I've decided to
also keep my dialup for the next two months or so incase I need it. I
got it to work well last night, so hopefully, this means I've chosen a
reliable company for a backup. Anyway, I feel bad that all of this
has gone way offtopic. In any case, the broadband's working a bit
now, so I'm back on my Mac! yay! Btw, they said they'd come and
yesterday, no one did. We're still waiting, but as I said, we're
calling them to have the account closed. To answer your questions
about wireless, we used to have the regular cable and had the same
problem. that's one of the reasons why we switched to wireless. I
also tried connecting the wire to my Macbook when the service wasn't
working and that did nothing. At that point, even the main computer
that's hooked up to the router wasn't receiving a signal. Hopefully,
we won't have these problems with Verizon.

Later,

One thing that us comcast users can't solve is, when downloading a
torrent, we get kicked from the internet and have to plug our
modems back in.

hi Tiff,

We need to get to the bottom of the comcast thing. Is it a
wireless issue,
a router issue a comcast issue???

Have you for instance been able to et a connection by plugging
the modem
directly into your mackbook? If you can do that, can you get a
connection
with the modem connected to the router and your macbook connected
to the
router? If you cahn do that, we need to look at the wireless
issue. If
everything is setup right, we need to figure out what is
interfering with
your connection and there are plenty of possibilities and work
arounds.
Some MacBooks don't have much wireless range so you may need to
see if you
can get an usb wireless adaptor that will work with your Macbook.
I think
there are other options here but they are less certain to work.
I also do
not know if there is even a usb wireless adaptor that will work
with the
mac.

The reason to bother with all this is that using dial up will be
more of a
pain than you might realize especially if there is a choice.

I hope this can be sorted out. I know others have tried and
died, but I've
been able to successfully trouble a number of comcast issues.
