often the case with powerbooks is first off the hard drive will fail. then the battery will of course lose charge if not treated with care and reconditioned. then the cooling fan will become clogged needing attention. some documented cases include ATA controller lockups which are fixed by flishing the PRAM and recalling the last EFI boot rom. can be a bit technical but its been done.

then of course there's keyboard and LCD issues but the beauty of a powerbook especially G4's is the ability with skilled hands to bring it to life in the way that it was intended. I'm thankful that I have access to a wonderful company and a real good friend who owns it who supplies me with spares etc at little or no cost depending on the machine.

I have a few 80GB laptop hard drives for powerbooks which are kept as emergency stock. as well as DVD drives, memory, other components including powerpacks, spare hinges to replace damaged bracket problems and more. so a service through me, you get a brand new machine for a refurb job.

my last machine was a powerbook G3 pizmo with a real good spec. it was upgraded and redesigned in a week and then given to a good friend for his charity. so whether its a refurb and sale or charity based work etc I cover all grounds. apple UK know me well for new and old machines and the rare old machines get my personal attention.

as I say if you would like a new home for the powerbook and have it serviced then I would take it on and save its life. it would then probably benefit someone I know well who desperately needs a laptop.

anyhow powerbooks. well.... anything from apple lasts longer than a windows cough cough splutter computer will ever do

anyhow

have a real great day and take care

Hi Scot and all,

The two choices to give it away or keep it and replace the hd do not involve replacing it because I already have what would replace it if I gave it a home. I appreciate the info on the hd upgrade. the user guide instructs on how to replace the hd but I hadn't found where to get one. I should have
known that NewEgg would have one.

I wonder though, if I replace the hd, how long can I expect the rest of the system to last before something else fails? I know the hd is the weakest link but there's also the keyboard and lcd to consider. Anyway. This is an interesting ponder because I hate to just throw stuff away if it can be
used.

Thanks!

Hi, David,
I think the hard drive swap for a powerbook Titanium is fairly
straight forward. I googled "how to replace powerbook titanium
drive" and found several links of how to guides. Here's one example:

http://xlr8yourmac.com/powerbook_g4/PB_G4_HD_upgrade/pb_g4_hd_upgrade.html

That said, a new HD can be easily ordered from www.newegg.com for about $80.

the www.macfixit.com site is also a good resource. IMHO< you may not
need to give it away just yet. Although, any excuse to pick up a new
MacBook might be worth it too.

Best,
Scott

Hi all,

Disc utility reports failure of my powerbook titanium hd. It still runs
the
os and I can even install the os on it in all thre ways but often, it does not boot and the only cure seems to be reinstalling the os. This is a well
worn system so I don't have any regrets but am wondering if I should
replace
the hd or if It would be best just to scrap the system. I also have a thought that I'd be willing to find it a good home if someone is in need of or has a desire for one. I don't see any other hardware issues with it and the drive would need to be replaced in any event but if you want it and
want
to replace the drive, I'll ship free. It comes with backpack, extra
battery, vga adaptor, phone cord, ethernet cable, charger all original documentation, media and I'll throw in outspoken and enlarge but would be
happy to keep it if I can replace the hard drive fairly simply.

I checked the Apple site and turned up nada. I will give the store a call later today and see what they say. Unfortunately, the apple care plan is
long expired and I don't know if one could even be obtained.

Thoughts are welcomed.

P.S. Remember, this is not an intel system. the specs are 867ghz
processor,
1gb ram and a 30g hd. the formfactor is 15 inch display.
