AppleCare makes a lot of sense for laptops because of their higher failure rates but I wouldn't bother for desktops.

I've been using Apple hardware since the Apple II+ back in 1980 and so I've seen a lot of their hardware come and go. In more recent years my experience has been that laptops have a much higher failure rate than desktops. This is probably because they are bumped and banged around a good bit more and all the electronics are packed into a much smaller container. That packing makes heat more of an issue which shortens component life. So while my Apple II still fires up (last time I pulled it out of the attic) my laptops have not fared as well. Usually at about the third year or so they start getting quirks so I start to plan on switching to a new unit and by year 4-5 I'm also thinking how slow the hardware has started feeling. Odd how that happens since it always seems so fast when you first get it.

I was just curious if Apple Care is worth it? I live off a limited income, and
am having enough of a hard time getting the funds needed to get the Macbook.
Would I not be able to call tech support without it? How much of a necessity is
it to have it? I'm quite computer sufficient, the only thing I would need is to
learn the new OS. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
