If you have to ask then something is seriously wrong with your thought process. Can you do your college studies with Text Edit? That's almost like saying creating tables and spreadsheets are the same. By the way, can you create tables, foot notes or the like in Text Edit? The answer is no and that answer is simple. Its because it is a Text Editor and not a word processor. I can type text in a web form, edit it and change font sizes, but that doesn't make it a text editor much less a word processor. If it was a word processor then we wouldn't need Microsoft to make MS Word accessible, we wouldn't be looking at other alternatives to word processing such as Nisus Writer. Even the makers of Bean which is a closer example and a better tooled text editor says it isn't a word processor. Just because you can type text doesn't make it a word processor.
