Hey again, forgot to answer one of your questions; the dock is
simply a place on your screen where lots of your commonly used apps
can live. You can add apps to it or take them away. When any app is
running, it will not only show up on the dock, but its status will
show as being running. You can access your documents and downloads
folders on the dock as well, simply by navigating to them there, and
pressing enter on them.
As has been said before, the dock is in essence a combo of the
desktop and the taskbar in Windows if you're more familiar with that
paradigm.
