thanks, Chris. It really is my fan and it has got progressively louder
over the last few days for no reason at all. I haven't changed the way
and ambience in which I use it. When I tip it forward or backwards,
the whirring sound stops to the previous more silent operation. I
think I shall have to have it seen to. Nuisance! I will look up the
links you have kindly sent me. Most grateful again, Simon

Probably just your fan cranking up. That depends a lot on how you're
holding the machine, the ambient room temperature and what you're
doing. I've even found some web sites with complex Flash ads that
would get my fans spinning. Also leaving my laptop running on the
comfy chair would sometimes get it heated up. I guess the bottom was
insulated and the air vents in the back were somewhat blocked so it
kicked into high gear. I haven't used them but there are a number of
utilities for checking and controlling fan speed. Here's a few links:

Hi James,
I haven't really started using any more powerful applications as
before but I have noticed a change in the loudness of my Mac. I
think you ar probably right that it may be my fan. I guess I am a
bit susceptible to sound - I find it irritating - and that's why I
have noticed the change in the volume of the sound coming from my
Macbook. As for the applications, I use Mail, Safari, Nisus Pro/
Textedit, and that's mostly it.
With best ishes

Dear Simon,
What applicationsa re you using? So high impact applications use
more processing power. Also, I've found that because I leave my
MacBook running almost constantly, sometimes the fan doe run louder.
But maybe others on this list can offer you a more satisfactory
answer.
Warmest wishes
James

Dear Listers,
For some reason my Macbook Pro has become louder. It used to very
very quiet like a dream just whispering. Now I can hear more of
whirring noise of the hard disk. Has anyone noticed the same
behaviour as you have been using your Macbook for some time?
I'm a bit worried something is going wrong, and of course, I
loved the fact my Macbook was so incredibly quiet. Mind you, it
is still quiet by any standards.
Thanks, folks, Simon
