VO-Shift-F3 to turn cursor tracking off, then you can do as Jessi
says
to get to the last message, but just leave the VO cursor there. You
can write replies, and even use backspace and arrows to edit it,
without moving the VO cursor. You can then just VO-Right to read new
messages as they come in, including your own as you send them. With
cursor tracking off at least, VoiceOver even saves your position in
multiple chats, so you can Command-Accent from chat to chat and keep
your place in each one. There's a Skype setting that decides whether
chats are split into their own windows like that I think, but I don't
remember just where it is at the moment.

the chat window is a little weird. when youget a new message, if you
VO left arrow and hear main frame, then you interact with that, and
once you do you'll hear chat frame. you interact with that too, so
there's two interactions in a row. then if you VO shift right arrow,
it'll take you to the end of the chat window where you'll see the
most
recent message. then to reply youhave to stop interacting with both
areas and VO right arrow over to the edit field to type your message.
it's much easier just to voice chat with skype! lol. the built in mic
that comes with the mac is amazing, it doesn't even sound like an
internal mic.

Hi all,
I'm sure this has been asked many times before, so I beg your
indulgence for raising the issue of using skype with Voiceover once
again.
Just to explain where I'm coming from on this. I am a very
experienced jaws user who has just started playing seriously with my
mac. I'm trying to get the hang of using skype and, if I'm honest,
making a pig's ear of it.
Are there any easy ways to navigate around that screen? In
particular, I find the chat window very cumbersome to interact
with. For example, are there any quick ways to find out what the
latest incoming message is?
Thanks much,
Donal
