I bet they've been working on ITunes and the Nano for a long time.  Many 
people seem to think that product roll outs are done in fits and starts, In 
fact, research and development is usually far in advance of the current 
product and encorporates findings and development as it happens through the 
cycles which is why it seemed to take so long and then boom!
