Hi Chris.
Yeah. You are right. The digital output is only activated if you set a
program to use it. For example you can set the dvd-player program to
play through the digital out. The problem there is that voiceover or
other sterio sounds which are not converted to 5.1 digital surround
doesn't come through the speakers. However, Voiceover does come back
again when you close the dvd player. This would also happen if you
bought an external sound card. It does also happen in Windows, so it's
not only a Voiceover problem.

Probably something like this:

for $8. Looks like a mini headphone jack on one end but its really
an optical cable which you would run into your digital optical in on
a 5.1 AV receiver. From what I've read the 5.1 data stream from a
DVD will play out through this fine but the rest of the Mac's audio
chain is just stereo. So if you have some other video files with
multiple channels they will get mixed down to stereo out. I've never
tried this but I assume the digital audio in would work in a similar
fashion. Probably worth the couple bucks to play.

Hi Jacob.
The headphone jack on the Macbooks is not just only a headphone
jack. It's a digital output as well. You can get a little adapter
which converts a optical digital connecter to a jack-connecter. I
use it every day and it works pretty well. I have red that the Imac
computers have these digital out connecters as well.

Hi
I thought I explained why I'd rather have a USB sound card,
actually. I would rather make the centerpiece of the theater
system something accessible, and have less parts to deal with--
something like an iMac. This might be kind of a dumb question...
but what digital output? I don't actually see anything on my
Macbook that resembles an optical out. Is it hidden somewhere, or
do you mean something else by "digital out?" Mine is the white
2.4ghz Macbook.

Hi Jacob.
I also have a 6.1 surround receiver. I just use my digital output
on my Macbook. why do you need a uSB sound card?
Regarding tv-tuners, I have a Pinnacle E50 USB t-tuner. I have
just upgraded to the full version of EyeTv, and I really love the
program. It's not all the features which are accessible, but I
can record, convert the videos to other filetypes and use the
normal navigation features in the program like switching between
the channels, adjust the volume and things like that.

Hi everyone
I'm wondering what the best USB sound card is to be used on OS X
with full capabilities. In short, this is what I'd need:
at least 5.1 surround output (true surround, not pro logic),
optical in and out with the ability to decode DTS into true
surround, at least two RCA inputs, digital coax input (though
that is optional), microphone input (optional)
I see quite a few Creative cards that would fit this description
but they do not have OS X drivers (and no, I won't use Windows
for this). I'm planning a home theater setup, I do have a 6.1
receiver but was considering just eventually getting an iMac and
revolving the home theater around that instead due to its
accessibility and the fact that it could be used for more than
just the home theater. Besides, using Front Row as an
entertainment hub is just too cool of an idea to pass up. Some
of the M-audio cards look good, though I don't know how
accessible their driver software is and user experiences seem to
be mixed with some saying they work great and others reporting
lag problems. I've used m-audio in the past and tend to believe
they would be good choices.
On a related note, what are your experiences with different USB
TV tuners, in regards to the accessibility of their software?
Which ones should I consider and which ones should I avoid?
Any opinions on this are greatly appreciated.
