No you don't need to, as time machine uses sparse images. But
sometimes it's adviseable to do this, especially if you're going to be
sharing the drive between the Mac and Windows--I wouldn't trust my
only backup to fat32 which is your best bet for being able to read the
drive on all operating systems.
