Hi Kamal.

There are a few things you have to know when you boot up your Mac for the first time: When the machine boots up for the first time, you'll hear the speech say "english." This is not Voiceover, but the system voice which speaks. If you want to install your operating system in english, you have to press return, otherwize you have to get sighted assistance to choose another language. When you have selected your language, you can press command f5 (command is the key to the left of the spacebar) and then f5 to start Voiceover. If that doesn't work, try to press command fn f5. Now you are ready to configure your operating system for the first time. You can use the tab key most of the time to find the buttons you need, just like in windows. If you feel you are missing some text, you can hold down control and option, (the two keys next to the fn key) and press the left and right arrow keys to move the VO cursor and read the text on the screen.

Please know: That's how it worked then I configured my MacBook for the first time. Some things might have changed.

Good luck with your new Mac.
Best regards
Søren Jensen

Hello there, how are you doing?

I hope all is well with you.

As for your questions, I hope you find the following useful.

The tutorial that you are able to use when first booting the mac is a
great tool to get started. Also, using VO, or holding down Control
and Option, then pressing K will take you into learning mode. Also,
pressing and holding VO, or Control and Option, and then pressing F7,
will bring up a menu that has a wide variety of areas taht you can
look at. The menu is called the VoiceOver Menu, and you will arrow up
an down to see what is available, then pressing the right arrow to
open the sub menu, while pressing the left arrow to close the sub
menu. These menus have many of the commands you will be able to use
while using voiceOver, and will help you in learning how to use the
ScreenReader. When you look through these menus, and fine a
particular function you want, it will automatically asume you know
what VoiceOver key is, or holding down Control and Option. So the
functions found in these menus will only have the extra keys needed to
be pressed. For xample, when you look under the Navigation menu, it
iwll have several functions to navigate. The ones that you will be
using such as navigating left, right, up, and down, will just say left
arrow, right arrow, up arrow, and down arrow respectively after the
function is announced. So, to perform such a navigational function,
you would hold down VO, or Control and Option, and then press the
arrows needed to navigate.

This should help in getting started. If you need anymore information
please do not hestitate to mail list.

As for Microsoft Office, I would advise against it. It is currently
not accessible at the moment, at leat not to my knowledge Here are
some products you would want to check out.

Open Office
This is a free office suite, with presentation software, word
processing software, and spreadsheet software. They each have their
qerks of course, and are not 100# bug free, but in general, Word
Processing and the SpreadSheet is workable to use.
This can be found at the following link.

Nisus writer
This is not a free aplication, but it is a good word processing choice
if you don't mind paying for it. The general consensis is that is is
very accessible, and works rather well. Again, it is not free, and is
about 40 dollars last I checked.
This can be found at the following link.

Tables
This is another solution to spread sheet. I hear it is very
accessible, and has a couple of little minor things with voiceOver.
This is not free software though. worth checking out though.
You can find this at the following link.

All the paid software I have mentioned above have demos, so you can
try it out.

As for tutorials, I don't know of any off hand. You can always ask us
though, and we will be happy to help out. Give this link a go
though. It has some great information about using voiceOver with some
software, and has recommendations as to what is good to use. It also
has some resources that you may find useful.

I hope all this helps out.

Please take care.

Hi everyone:

 Hi everyone:

My questions might sound very basic for experienced users like you
but that's because I am very very new to Mac OS. In fact, i just
order my first MacBook laptop. Up till now I used Windows with both
Jaws and Window Eyes. My question to you is whether Microsoft Office
package works with VoiceOver. I use Excel heavily and I am hoping
that I could slowly migrate all my computer tasks to one computer.

Also, would he documentaiton that comes with VoiceOver should be
suficient to learn how to Use the Mac OS or do you suggest other
resources?

Thanks,

kamal
