TK: I believe that it can be done in Terminal using the "diskutil" command. Try "man diskutil" and scroll down until you find the explanation for the resize verb. I've used the diskutil to create a mirrored raid on active drives without incident but have not tried resize on the startup volume. The man page claims that i's possible but, of course, recommends that you backup your data first.
