You know what... I keep seeing side bar. Can someone tell me exactly what
that is? Is that where my volumes are mounted, I guess?

Its' in Finder preferences, under "sidebar". You can uncheck the things
you don't want. Interact with the tool bar, then vo to the "sidebar"
button, and press it with "vo+space".
