Hi
It should take at most about 30 seconds to restore the iPod. If it's
taking any longer than that it's caught in a loop somewhere. I wonder
what phase it is at? Have you already gotten past the "optimizing your
iPod for Mac OS X" stage? This is the formatting stage and if it's
stuck here or shortly after this stage you may have a hard drive
problem. Try doing the following, I had to do this when my iPod
classic was caught in a firmware loop:
1. Disconnect the iPod
2. Slide the hold switch on then off again, then hold down the menu
and select buttons for about five seconds (this resets the iPod)
3. Connect it back up to iTunes. If iTunes recognizes it then all is
well. If, on the other hand, you get a dialog box saying that your
iPod is in recovery mode and must be restored then all is not well
yet. Try restoring the iPod again. If the restore button doesn't
appear, as happened in my case, format the iPod with disk utility,
making sure to select Mac OS Extended, Journaled as the filesystem.
You will need to quit iTunes before you can do this. Do not, repeat do
not, repartition the iPod, just format the volume.
4. If disk utility successfully formatted the iPod, you should now be
able to go into iTunes and restore it. If disk utility doesn't succeed
in formatting, though, it's a pretty good bet you've got a hard drive
issue.
Disclaimer: this worked for me. I do not claim it will work for you,
blah blah blah, and I'm not responsible for damage to the iPod, yada
yada yada.

Hi guys, any one know how long it's supposed to take to restore an
Ipod classic? I think it's been labouring away for an hour or two
here. Unfortunately I can't interact with the progress bar in that
window, so I don't know if it's moving, but I can hear that the hard
drive is powered up, and if I put the back of the unit flat against
one ear and my hand flat against the other ear, I think I can hear
activity on the drive. Two hours though... Should I be worried? I
just got it, and it was set up for windows when I need it for mac.
Thanks,
