Hi Erik,
Glad this worked. I think the people in the Apple Store must have been
referring to the iPod Nano 4G if they were speaking of talking menus.
I don't believe there is spoken menus support for the Classic. On the
Summary Page for the iPod Nano 4G that appears when it is connected,
along with the options that you can check to specify whether you want
to manually manage content, sync only checked songs and videos, etc.
there is a checkbox for "Enable spoken menus for accessibility". I've
only found that option to appear for the iPod Nano 4G. If you have
VoiceOver activated when you connect your iPod Nano 4G and do your
initial setup, that box should automatically be checked. (If you had
to force quit iTunes in the initial iPod setup, similar to what
happened with your restore, the box to enable spoken menus may have to
be manually checked.) So I think there was some confusion in the
information you received for the iPod Classic. Unless you have an
option to "Enable spoken menus" that feature is not supported for your
iPod.
There's a podcast on the Cobolt Systems i-Tel that you can get at:
feed://feeds.feedburner.com/tandt
Brian Hartgen also made a podcast on the iPod Nano 4G, so you can
compare the two. Use this as a guide for what parts of the iPod menu
are supported and what the voices and interfaces sound like for i-Tel
vs. Nano 4G, rather than for detailed instructions, since these
podcasts are aimed primarily at people who use the J-Tunes scripts and
JAWS. There is some discussion of performance under WE. Also, maybe
Tim and others who have direct experience with the i-Tel can tell you
more about it.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Esther

Thanks guys. I forced quit iTunes and then reset the iPod. When I
went back into ITunes the restore worked perfectly. So now it
appears to be working with my mac, but I thought the apple store
people told me it would come up talking if the boxes were checked in
universal access... Which they are and no talky. Maybe I need to
go and buy something like an ITel for that to happen, but the tech
at the apple store distinctly told me I could get up and talking
without one. Any one ever done this? I've checked the archives but
didn't find anything.
Thanks,

It shouldn't take you that long, but then I wasn't converting mine.

Hi guys, any one know how long it's supposed to take to restore an
Ipod classic? I think it's been labouring away for an hour or two
here. Unfortunately I can't interact with the progress bar in
that window, so I don't know if it's moving, but I can hear that
the hard drive is powered up, and if I put the back of the unit
flat against one ear and my hand flat against the other ear, I
think I can hear activity on the drive. Two hours though...
Should I be worried? I just got it, and it was set up for windows
when I need it for mac.
