How about some of the others in the Canon Lide series, like the Lide
70 or 90? The 70 runs about $79 IIRC. Caveat: higher numbers in the
Lide series do not always mean newer models. Honestly though, if
there's any way at all you can get the 600F you should go for it. It's
a very nice little unit and well worth its price--a bit more expensive
than the rest of the Lides but its much more durable as well. It's
also much, much quieter than the other lide models.
Failing that, most standard desk-sized flatbed scanners seem to run
about $79-$99, provided you don't need something portable that is.
Canon's usually a good bet for OS X compatibility, as are most of the
later Epson models (do your research on the Epsons though as not all
of them have Mac drivers). I've also heard good things about HP
scanners under Mac, though it's been quite a while since I've used an
HP scanner so I can't say for certain if that's true.
In any case, I highly recommend the Lide 600F if you can, and one of
the other Lide models if you can't and still want something portable.

Okay, so I found the Plantronics .audio 750 headset (which is leopard
compatible) for $39 instead of $79 and a cable that has female and
male as well as 25 and 9 pin serial connectors for $9.95 that I'll use
to connect to my Keyspan adapter.

So I'm fine there. But now I need a scanner that I can use with
Vuescan. The most important requirements are that it's under $100 and
that the lid opens all the way so I can scan thick materials. I
considered the CanoScan LiDE 600F, since the lid opens 180 degrees and
it's even accessible with my Compaq Armada running Windows 98 and
comes with Omnipage. But they're all too expensive. Cannon had a
refurbished one for $54 but it's not adding it to my cart. Any help
would be appreciated.
