THanks John, what was throwing me off is the unknown area had my
message I typed in it. I guess both send and receive messages show in
that area? I'll check the options again, I must have missed that as an
event.

The unknown is the area where incoming messages are shown. You
need to interact with that area. Also, you can set Adium to read
incoming messages automatically. This is done in the Events tab in
Adium preferences.
