I have the 8 gb model. I bought my iPod dock with the nano at the same time
but i'm hoping 4 hours is more then enough time to charge a totally dead
battery.
Apple support told me to also try a full reset of the device which i have
done so i will keep an eye on the playback time and if it's way less then 24
hours i'll get it replaced.
I reckon it's way under 20 hours.

The iPod will still charge when ejected. It draws power from the USB
port, regardless of whether iTunes is running or not. I suspect Apple
support thought you meant unplugging the iPod, because as long as it's
connected it will charge.
For the iPod dock it depends. The 4th gen nano altered some aspects of
its charging technology (specifically it now charges via the USB pins
only rather than the firewire and USB pins), so most docks that were
meant for iPods like the classic or older Nanos will work but won't
charge it. I'm not sure why this was done, and believe me there's more
than a few people ticked off over it. If you have a 4th gen compatible
dock the iPod will fully charge, otherwise the dock will work fine but
will not charge the iPod.
Battery life will vary depending on what kind of audio files you have,
what bitrate they are, and how often you use the iPod's controls. In
general, I'd estimate I'm getting about 27 hours of audio content.
Naturally this goes down if you throw video into the mix, I'd estimate
getting anywhere from 5 and a half to six hours of video playback. Also
note that if you use the speed controls while playing audio books the
battery will drain slightly faster.
I have the 16gb nano, battery life may be slightly different on the 8gb,
not sure which one you have.
