Hello Simon,
To repair disk from the Install disc, select Use English as the main
language and press Continue, then on the next screen, go to the menu
bar. If you go right, you'll find Utilities, and somewhere in that
menu you'll find Disk Utility.

different voice in Voiceover not Alex.
If you could shed any light on this event in case I have to do it
again, I would appreciate.
I wonder whether my startup volume had a problem because I had been
fiddling with Fusion.
