I think it would be really useful to be able to carry my OpenOffice
installation around with me. Thumb drives (USB drives) are becoming
larger (1G+ available now). Combining this technology with OpenOffice
would allow you to plug in your USB drive and have instant access to the
application (OpenOffice) as well as your data.

This feature would be very handy for students and business travelers. Students frequently use 'community' computers in libraries, labs, etc. Having a consistent set of applications, configured as they like them,
would make their life easier. Likewise, business travelers frequently
end up using public machines in Kinkos, client business offices, etc. Being able to access their documents and applications would simplify
their life considerably and be more efficient.

I know there are some technology hurdles (is the JVM installed on the
machine, installation drive designations, etc.) to be overcome but I
think it can be done.

If you search the archives of this and the user list you will see some exhaustive discussion about this topic. I believe that this can be done in OOo 1.1.x. I do it and there is a FAQ about it.

It has been said that it will be even easier in 2.0 because of better
installation procedures that recognize relative drive letters, or
something like that. So, the future is here today, so to speak. :)
