I think the idea of secondary downloads is good. Using OpenOffice is (in one way) all about choice. Users have options, real options, giving them them opportunity to make intelligent and reasoned choices. Let them decide if they need 500mb of pictures, etc. I don't and I wouldn't get them, but that doesn't mean the next user doesn't and wouldn't.
The one thing that really attracts me to the Gimp, OpenOffice.org and others Open Source projects like this is the plethora of resources that are available. Given the highly organized nature of the OpenOffice.org project, if would seem to me that there could be a mechanism for providing resources that had been "vetted" if you will to ensure their suitability and accuracy . These resources could be directly linked from the download page. Another set of resources would be those from the general community of OpenOffice.org users that may or may not have been examined with the same rigor as the "official" resources. Just some thoughts.
