If an application can crash or damage your OS it's a problem of the OS, not the application. But anyway, I never used had version of OOo on any OS that damaged the latter. Of course beta versions are known to crash a little more often than production releases and some features might show a strange behavior at times. But I never damaged my OS using OOo (or StarOffice).
