On top of this, does OpenOffice provide the option of adding file meta-data directly from within OOo? That is to say, the author, the title the subject, keywrods, comments etc? That are read differently by different OS's? If it does, then there's your solution Alex. If you properly identify your files in the first place, you won't need to creat different directories. That's part of what next generation FileSystems were supposed to solve. Knowing what a file is was, and will be. Rigel
