I cannot recall any specific question on the graphics list on that
topic, offhand. Could you please specify your requirements in detail
again, and explain why you think that they are a necessary
precondition for wider adoption in academia?

The core of Impress and its slideshow is written in C++. Various
multimedia add-ons can be plugged via generic UNO (choose any of the
bridgeable UNO languages), or add something to the Java Media
Framework, for which integration has already been done.
