So here is a question...what if MSO adopts the ODF format? As in
Import/Export or part of the native save/open. OOo has MSO's formats, what
would stop MSO from using these too? I mean, if I were MS, and ODF started
becoming a major threat, I'd just include it. Why not...

This wouldn't level the playing field so much as aid in making documents
cross platform/software. If MSO could open/convert/save ODF, this would be a
good thing...I wouldn't have to save MSO formats to send to my MSO bound
colleagues.

Just makes common sense to me...MSO did incorporate WordPerfect formats and
Lotus formats when they became big enough players; seems to me they will do
the same with ODF as well, perhaps in the next version or two. When ODF
begins to be a thorn in MSO's foot, they'll probably start supporting it and
make it a positive thing for them, right?

Of course, I could be wrong, and I'm ok with that. :)

Sincerely,
Andrew Robertson

The advantage of OpenDocument from a search engine's point of view is
that it allows more scemantics. You can search for documents titled
"Finnance" with the text "Travel" written by Daniel with at least one
edit by Chad that hasn't been updated since January.

Okay, that specific example is not interesting, but I'm sure Google can
think of a way to put those scemantics to good use. And future versions
of OpenDocument will allow arbitrary scemantics (using RDF).

Google has shown at least some interest in OpenDocument (e.g. they went
to the ODF meeting from IBM, they contribute at OOo, etc). Plus, they
are Microsoft's competitor.

I think that ODF will break Microsoft's monopoly and create a more level
playing field. Think of dominos. Think of the first crack in a damm.

Cheers,
Daniel.
