I have used OpenOffice.org ever since it was launched, and I always thought
of it as a better product than the otherwise prevalent Microsoft Office
series.
OpenOffice.org better than MS Office? Sorry, but that made me LOL. :-D
Disclaimer: I think MS Office (except Excel) is pretty bad, but
OpenOffice.org is *even worse*!
... a new version should be developed from ground up,
You did say you were a "student of computer studies"? Do you realize how
many lines of code would need to be re-written?
You *have* heard of Joel Spolsky, haven't you? Well, do yourself a favor
and spend some time reading his articles - at *least* this one:
*Things You Should Never Do, Part I*

using the
more advanced hardware and software technologies available nowadays. New
features should be introduced, and the overpowering, info-deluxe interface
of 2.x should be replaced with something much more subtle. Advanced
features
should be readily available too, but off the face. Directly speaking, the
Office 2007 benchmark needs to be broken. I wish I could do something about
it, apart from distributing OpenOffice in my community, and donating. It
seems so sad to see my favourite office suite being finally beaten.
Well, the good news is that OpenOffice.org might wake up and (badly)
copy an actually good word processor: *WordPerfect*. Nah, aint gonna
happen.
