I'm disappointed that you chose Beijing for the 2008 OOoCon. Given
the Chinese government's poor human rights record and violent
crackdown on protests in Tibet, a decision to hold any conference in
China is a tacit endorsement of the government's conduct. I am
especially surprised that an open source organization would hold a
conference in China in light of the Chinese government's censorship
of the internet.
Please reconsider.
Especially if you post things like this, it would be correct if you tell
us who you are.
Apart from that: I'm sure that many share your concerns. Not holding the
OpenOffice.org conference in China won't solve anything, though. And
don't forget what the Dalai Lama said about the Olympics.
What can help, is if people ask attention for the situation in Tibet.
The OpenOffice.org conference might be a good moment for it. But IMO we
cannot do this as OpenOffice.org community - it will be embarrassing for
our friends in Beijing.
A possibility is, that companies/individuals involved in OpenOffice.org
who have a website, use that to ask attention for the people in Tibet.
I do so and hope that others to do the same (have asked some, will do more).
Kindest regards,
Cor
