Yes, CD is read only, it doesn't have anything to do with
OpenOffice.org, that's just the nature of the CD. Why don't you just
store them on a USB stick or an SD (or other) card instead? It's much
faster too.

If you are copying your documents from your CD to your HDD and they
are still read only, you need to make them editable. How you do that
depends on your operating system, which you didn't mention at all.

Have you actually tried that? I have LibreOffice 3.3 (pretty much
similar to OpenOffice.org 3.3) and I can still load my old
OpenOffice.org 1.0 documents (.sxc, .sxw and so on) without any
problems. Even the macros work.

You can even run two different versions on the same computer, so if
something doesn't work properly with the new version, you can open the
document with the old version.
