On most mailing lists there is an option to have emails sent to you once
per day or week, if you're annoyed with just the number of emails. Still
the same amount of reading though, for that I agree with the others, its
just how they work.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to join AnOtHeR forum..
Don't you use email filters? Mailing lists end up in folders (or labels in
GMail parlance) for people who deal with email like they should be. Then you
just peruse the folder at your leasure.
