There are over 120 pieces of data that Google uses to decide which websites
show up and in what order. Overall, Google is trying to provide the most
relevant results for the people who are searching so they'll keep coming
back to Google.
You can group all the factors that determine the search engine results into
two broad categories:
- Content Relevance
- Page Ranking
Content Relevance is about Google's determination of how relevant a given
website page is to a specific keyword. They look at things like keyword
density (How many times is the keyword used on the page), title tags (Is the
keyword in the title), and header and emphasis tags (Keywords in H1 tags or
STRONG tags indicate higher relevance). There's a balance in all of this. If
the keyword density is too high, Google may assume the site is "spamming"
the search engine and can penalize you! It's also important to have clean
HTML and the position of the keywords in the HTML file matters.
Page Ranking is about who links to you - Do other sites recognize you as an
authoritative resource. If you use the Google toolbar, it will show you the
Page Rank for any site. It's also about more than just links. If someone
links to you with a link that says "click here," you'll get less of a page
rank impact then from a link that says "The definitive resource on your
keyword."
I hope this helps a little. How hard it is to make this happen depends a lot
on the keyword you are targeting. If there's a lot of competition, it can
take a while and a lot of work to move up your search results. Depending on
the situation, that 's why a lot of people use pay per click sponsored ads.
