Back when I used FDS and Java on the back side, we had fun with dates. Dates in AS transfer the TZ info to Java, the converse holds true too. In our case we wanted all times in EST, so we had to 'time shift' all dates coming and going to the client using the timezoneOffset property of date. have to be careful of what your DB does too. I'd try a trace() of your Date before it goes to Java land then a log() of that date in Java land before anything touches it so you can see what is happening.
