Welcome to the list John
Yes there actually are others on this mailing list even though it is slow right
now.
It's your job to help solve this by asking questions as you are and also
providing your ongoing experience with Flex.

I can say that after starting out with the free version that there is now
comparison to purchasing the full version of Flex 3 in that your work flow
simply is more easily streamlined.

Take a look at what you can do with Flex for the price versus multiple other
third party software.

This is just my opinion.

Thanks Cameron!

To the group:

In making an argument for purchasing as opposed to downloading the free Flex SDK and getting it working with the free Eclipse download, would you have any advice?  My company may want to know why I want to do the former...

is actually based on Eclipse and you can install the Eclipse plugin version if you already have Eclipse.  Downloading and installing either the full or plugin version should give you everything you need to get started, including the Flex SDK.  The trial version of the IDE is either 30 or 60 days and I would highly recommend downloading git and giving it a try.
