That and AIR wouldn't be able to do much as far as integration, no API in AIR for that and AIR can't call out to a shell, eh? Not with out some major work at least.
I'd actually start over and ask why? You can create basically a gadget looking app in AIR. You can even use irregular shaped AIR apps too. Check out the Adobe AIR marketplace and look for Easy Cheesy, Krispy Kreme, and Dunkin Doughnuts for examples. Recall also, gadgets do not have to live in the Vista side bar either.
