Right so firebug is another proxy service. Here's the break down and why we as developers use these tools. Want to make sure others don't get confused by all of this.

In a lot of web development work like AJAX and such we make behind the scenes calls to a backend server running java, cf, etc. To introspect those calls, we use proxy tools.

For basic rest calls, webservices calls and JSON.
Firebug - a plugin for Firefox

There several proxy services but firebug is very popular. So with Flex related work we have usually AMF data streams to work with that normal proxies don't understand. There are a couple of tools that can read the AMF packets and introspect the contents.

To introspect the binary AMF serialization we normally deal with as Flex developers.
Charles
Service Capture

In my situation, I'm using Charles with normal flex development, but with this AIR project I have to figure out how to hook it up to the OS level network system.

In that case check out firefox's plugin firebug
It works on windows and linux so I assume mac as well.
You can see each request as it goes through and it will even categorize request
from those coming from other stuff. No second app it runs in firefox.

The way charles works is that is configures the browser's proxy settings,
pointing them to a port that Charles opens for proxying.
For PC and Mac, the proxy settings that the system uses are shared by
IE/Safari. So activating Charles essentially sends AIR requests through
that proxy.

In Linux, you would probably have to manually configure the proxy settings
at the network card level to point it at the Charles proxy port. Kinda a
pain, b/c when you close Charles, you have to go back and reset your proxy
for web requests to work again.

Well I'm on Linux but I think I may be able to make this work some how.

You can configure Charles to monitor Windows traffic or Browser
Traffic. Check out "Proxy > Windows Proxy" I think. Also check
"Proxy > Proxy Settings > Windows". I didn't crank up an AIR app to
confirm, but I know I have used Charles before to debug AIR apps.

You can also turn on logging to a file, but it's not going to be a
nice pretty clicky tree of data.
