If you filter a higher-resolution image to a lower-resolution one, you should also see improved noise characteristics. This was one reason why I'd asked whether you had tested any of the higher-resolution sensors. The larger pixel size of a low-resolution sensor would, of course, be expected to do well noise-wise.
