Thanks for clarifying what John might have intended, this wasn't obvious
to me before but I can understand the point you are making.
For me, I use the word lynching for this online behaviour because of the
similarities to real-world lynchings:
- it is a group, mob or gangster phenomena
- it is pre-meditated or at least organized in some way, e.g. the
antagonists have a private email thread or IRC session about it
- it is intended to have some outcome, e.g. a resignation, expulsion or
shaming that makes it really hard for the victim to come back, analogous
to murder
- in many cases, law enforcement looks the other way or in online cases,
the moderators do nothing until the kill is completed. Notice how they
only censored the libreplanet list /after/ RMS resigned.
Overall, the mentality behind these lynchings, the use of mob justice
instead of due process, is very similar to the mentality of lynching
suspected paedophiles or black people.
If you feel this confuses people though, what better terms can we use
when we want to emphasize the similarities of online bullying to these
real-world bullying tendancies? e-lynching, email-lynching?
Regards,
Daniel
