The easy packaging is a big plus, and I think, too, that "python setup.py install" is becoming somewhat of the defacto python installation standard. If it's just the network connection that's the major issue, don't do ez_setup. Just require users have setuptools installed. It's so common, I think, they'll have to install setuptools eventually when dealing with Python.
