This is an issue that affects all FS/OSS projects, not just Django. We have the same issue of finding new developers in Samba, except that the perception there is that CIFS development is some magic art that few can master. I'd like to say, though, that code speaks volumes more than suggestions, no offense (and not that suggestions aren't useful, too). Of all the comments that come up from time to time like this -- my ticket goes unnoticed, I'd become a developer if the core devs would have me, etc. -- code speaks more than cries for help. In this regard, the Django devs are much more open than other projects I know. We'd never open branches for folks at their request in Samba, for example. If you want to work on Django, ask for a branch. You don't even need a branch really. Run bzr or some such, apply patches yourself, test them, sign off on them, and let the core devs know they can pull a stable tree from you that contains patches applied for x, y, and, z. Or test the patches in Trac, provide your tests as attachments, etc. These are only examples, but there are *many* ways that people can get involved, and many more if you use your imagination. I guess I don't see an FS/OSS project as being charged with recruitment as much as providing opportunities for good developers to get involved, which I think Django is doing as well as any other project right now.
