I took a look at the PR and added a test case that passes on stable/1.7.x 
and master. If the PR is applied as-is it fails:

. But I'd like to get a few more eyes on the test so we can make sure it 
correctly represents the issue described in the ticket.

I furthermore tried to fix the issue with the patch 
in

. Assuming the test above is correct, this might be a way to solve the 
issue.
