Another factor here is that apparently Firebug as well as Webkit Inspector
don't track the favicon in their network tabs. This seems to be
independent of whether the favicon is linked to explicitly (using a <link
/>) or not (as fallback for old IE-behaviour).

Also when a favicon.ico is requested varies pretty heavily from browser to
browser.
