I think the choice of planning a set vs. freeform (and packing 15 records
vs. 40) depends a lot on the genre of music you're spinning, how well you
know the records, and your experience. Since I'm starting out too and don't
know all of my records well, I feel it's pretty risky for me to hit the
tables at a party thinking I'll improvise. I've tried this and some mixes
come out decently, but the bigger portion sound kind of unpleasant, even
with the beats matched and tracks in phase. This is because, at least with
progressive-to-epic trance (which is what I spin) two melodies often won't
harmonize together nicely. By planning out a set beforehand I can be
confident that, if all is executed well, the mix will sound pleasant. But
as I get more experience, develop a better "ear" for the music, and know my
records better, freeform *should* come more naturally (wishful thinking
here).
But I still fill my record bag to bursting so I at least *look* like I know
what I'm doing. =P
