Hmmm, that sounds like a nice elegant solution (the additional smtpd
instance, not the madness). I could have all "paths" through Postfix
funnel all e-mail to an single smtpd instance, which would have the job
of sending the e-mail on its way.

I'll follow this up (and be back if I hit another roadblock).

Then you probably ought to consider reworking your configuration to add
a final smtpd that does all the signing.  I suspect anything else is on
the path to madness due to complexity and corner cases.
