Yes, this was a case of stupid human tricks. Although I was pointing to the 0.9.8g include directory I was actually pointing to the openssl sub-directory. Just one of the many things I had tried in earlier compiles trying to get this working, but forgot to set it back (as is documented in Todd's post). Thanks for the help!
